"I attended Landmark East School for eight years, from 1998 to 2006. When my family and I moved from England to Nova Scotia, I was essentially illiterate and unable to even write a sentence.
In my first year at Landmark East, my progress was outstanding. In that short time I jump five grades. |
In the following years at Landmark East, my progress continued and I developed not only on the academic side but also in the areas of self-esteem and physical education. I have a huge respect for the many dedicated teachers who worked selflessly to help me and the many students overcome the sometimes overwhelming effects of having a learning difference.
I describe it as a learning difference, not a learning disability, because a disability can not be overcome and people try to look for “cures”. A student with a learning difference, whether it be dyslexia or ADHD, is not disabled – they simply need a different way of learning. That is why I say at Landmark East, you learn to learn. With the skill learned at Landmark East, students can meet their full potential.
Eight years ago, there was no real future for me – and where I would be now with out Landmark East is a scary thought, not only for me, but also for my family. By attending Landmark East, I have gone from illiteracy to class valedictorian – student body president and pilot. Now I am out in the world, following my dream of becoming a commercial pilot – with the skills and confidence to embrace my future, and quite literally, the sky is the limit to what I can do.
